This charming city is one of the oldest cities in Istria. The written record shows it was founded between III. and V. centuries; although this area was the home of the culture “Histra” many years before that.

What are the “must-see” attractions?
City Palace
The current seat of the City mayor was once the Praetorian Palace built in 1308. One part of the ground floor was the prison, while the other parts were Council Hall and the file room. The Palace was restored three times, every time including symbols of the Venetian and Rovinj families.
Town Clock
Famous Rovinj’s Town Clock was built in the 17th century and was part of the south corner of the former city walls. Below the Clock was a prison for minor misconduct. The clock mechanism, with its Venetian lion symbol, was situated on the town gate near the “Calliffi” palace.
Town Walls and Gates
Rovinj was surrounded by strong city walls, as early as the 7th century. Throughout time, the walls were strengthened by different towers. The city had 7 gates. Three of them have been preserved to this day: The Gate of the Holy Cross, The Portica, and the Gate of the St. Benedict.
Balbi’s Arch
In the same place as Balbi’s Arch were the Rovinj’s main gates – Portion della Pescheria. They were taken down in 1968-69, and the new Arch was put up instead.
Church of St. Euphemia
This is one of the most visited sites in Rovinj and Istria. The most interesting part of this particular church is the fact that in the mid-10th century, the sarcophagus of St. Euphemia miraculously floated onto the shore of Rovinj. The existing churches decided to unite and build a church dedicated to St. Euphemia. This church, besides being a sacred place, is a true masterpiece of art. Most famous architects, painters, and sculptures throughout the period it was built and rebuilt contributed to today’s appearance. Make sure to take Grisia Street while going to or leaving the Church of St. Euphemia.
Franciscan Monastery
This Monastery belongs to the baroque era and its building started in 1709. Like the Church of St. Euphemia, it is filled with artwork.
Castle on St. Andrew’s Island
This castle started its way like a Benedictine monastery built in the 6th century. With time, it was rebuilt, renovated, and took today’s appearance.
Besides these, Rovinj has a gorgeous theatre and more churches for you to discover. Also, the very streets in Rovinj are particular, and many of them date from the earliest forming of the city.

The Batana Centre of Visual Arts
This museum has been open and functioning since 1951. Its main goal was and still is to popularise photography. They organize public performances, workshops, educational and promotional programs, and projections of films, videos, and information media.

Although, if you prefer a different kind of “museum” – a very special place in Rovinj has – Rovinj’s Aquarium. Rovinj’s Aquarium is one of the world’s oldest buildings of this type. It is part of the Maritime Research Centre. Rovinj’s Aquarium represents typical undersea life in this area.
Besides the treats we mentioned, Rovinj is the home of three archeological sites, antic places where it all started – Villa Rustica, St. Damijan Quarry, and archeological park Monkodonja. Every site offers a little piece of early history and represents a special sightseeing potential.
